Background of the Study
Faith-based schools play a significant role in shaping the moral and ethical foundations of students. In Oshimili North Local Government Area, Delta State, these educational institutions integrate religious doctrines with academic curricula to foster a holistic development approach. The emphasis on spiritual values and moral codes in these schools is believed to influence students’ behavior, decision-making, and overall character formation (Udo, 2023). Through structured religious instruction and community involvement, faith-based schools provide a nurturing environment that reinforces ethical behavior and social responsibility (Ifeanyi, 2024). However, debates continue regarding the extent to which such institutions effectively balance academic excellence with moral upbringing. Critics argue that overemphasis on doctrinal teachings may limit exposure to diverse perspectives, whereas proponents maintain that a strong moral grounding is essential for personal and societal development (Okwu, 2025). This study investigates the contributions of faith-based schools to the moral upbringing of students, examining curricular content, pedagogical methods, and the broader societal impacts of integrating faith with education. The research aims to offer insights into best practices that can enhance both academic and moral development.
Statement of the Problem
Despite the positive intentions of faith-based schools in promoting moral values, challenges persist regarding the balance between religious instruction and academic rigor. In Oshimili North, concerns have been raised about whether an overemphasis on religious doctrines might compromise students’ exposure to a balanced educational experience. Additionally, there is limited empirical evidence on how effectively these schools contribute to moral development compared to secular institutions. This study seeks to identify these challenges and propose measures to optimize the integration of moral and academic education (Udo, 2023; Ifeanyi, 2024).
